The Collection of Sea Microorganisms | OGS

Activities

The CoSMi team is actively involved in several key areas:

Expansion of the collection

Every month, during routine sampling at the long-term research station LTER-C1 – monitored by OGS since 1986 for various physical, chemical, and biological parameters – CoSMi staff isolate and identify new microalgal strains to be added to the culture collection, thereby contributing to the ongoing characterisation of phytoplankton communities in the Gulf.

Molecular characterisation of strains

All strains, both existing and newly acquired, undergo DNA barcoding analyses to ensure precise taxonomic identification.

Cryopreservation of strains

Maintaining the long-term viability and genetic integrity of cultures through optimised cryopreservation protocols.

In addition to these core activities, CoSMi participates in national and international research projects aimed at strengthening the collection and advancing scientific knowledge of phytoplankton diversity, ecology, and interactions with the marine environment.

CoSMi also supports external research initiatives by providing cultures, equipment, and laboratory facilities, enabling a broad range of experimental studies.

Finally, CoSMi is actively engaged in science communication and outreach, promoting awareness of microbial biodiversity – particularly microalgae – and their essential role in sustaining healthy marine ecosystems.
